Roadside, between Hemet and Perris, Ca

Me and Brittney woke up at 4 am, loaded the truck with ammo and food for 3 days just in case.  On the way out of town we raided a sporting goods store, well, tried to raid it.  There wasn't much left.  I found one box of shells under an overturned soda machine.  I think the shells are still ok.  I was able to find a cleaning kit and clean the guns we brought with us.  We brought: my shotgun, Brittney's shotgun, 2 .30-06's, and 2 pistols.  I also have a crowbar.  With the sporing goods store being a total bust we headed to Perris.

The road is a 4 lane surface street, 2 lanes in some places.  It was the worst road I've ever seen.  Zombies everywhere, most of them with severed arms and legs, a lot of them just crawling around.  There were a lot of car fires and wrecks too.  I had to mostly drive along the side of the road.  The worst we saw was where some police and (it looked like) civilians must have made a last stand.  There was a barricade made of sandbags and cars blocking the road, there were dead zombies piled everywhere.  It looked like a hell of a battle, they probably held out for a day or 2 against thousands of zombies.  There were a few human bodies with bullet holes in their heads and guns in their hands.  They probably covered the retreat and committed suicide rather than be bit.

Perris is a city full of warehouses and the like, much more industrialized than Hemet.  The city is covered in thick, black smoke, a lot of fires, like the road.  It took us about 2 hours to go 25 miles to the evac site.  There weren't many others there.  Maybe 10 or 15 people including me and Brittney.  Not many would talk to me, one guy told me that there had been constant fighting and explosions every night since the first out brake.  He said Hemet “sounded nice” compared to Perris.  A lot of people were covered in dried blood.  I felt like I was in Hell, all the fires and smoke and desperate looking people.  I'm still coughing from the smoke and the crap that was in the air.

We had to fight off about 100 zombies at the evac site, 2 people died in that fight.  No one knew their names and they didn't have any ID.  We waited all day for the choppers.  Nothing.  We had kept the truck's radio on throughout the day, it had been mostly static, I guess all the radio stations in the area have been commandeered for government use.  At about 5 in the afternoon an announcement came over the radio that said the evac had been canceled due to the smoke, apparently, it too thick to fly.  Bullshit.  The coward pilots won't fly and I guess their commanders are ball-less.  Fuckers.

Why the fuck didn't they tell us this this morning!  I can't describe the general feeling of rage, abandonment, and hopelessness that swept over us.  We didn't say much, some cursing, a man and woman were crying.  Me and Brittney didn't say much.  We swore a bit and got back into the truck.  It was night by the time we left.  I thought we could make it.  I was an idiot.  Currently, she's asleep and I'm on watch.  It's dark, really dark.  The only light is coming from the various fires burning in Perris.  I haven't seen many zombies and the one's I have seen ignored us.  We have the windows up and are keeping quiet and low.  Anyone walking by wouldn't be able to see us unless they specifically looked in the window.

Tomorrow we're going to try to go back to Home Depot and ride out the rest of this cluster-fuck.  This sucks.
Part 9. Enjoy!
